Tonight is the big night. We’ll be updating the awards as they’re given out. Jimmy Fallon’s already had the teleprompter fail. What’s next?
Best Motion Picture-Drama
Hacksaw Ridge
Hell or High Water
Lion
Manchester by the Sea
WINNER: Moonlight
Our take: Another upset, but only because it seemed as if this was Moonlight‘s year and it’s only now winning.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture-Drama
Amy Adams, Arrival
Jessica Chastian, Miss Sloane
Ruth Negga,Loving
Natalie Portman, Jackie
WINNER: Isabelle Huppert, Elle
Our take: This is a surprise. That is a stable of not only great performances but also a list of actresses who have a lot of momentum. Chastain was my wish, but there’s no loser here.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture-Drama
WINNER: Casey Affleck, Manchester by the Sea
Joel Edgerton, Loving
Andrew Garfield, Hacksaw Ridge
Viggo Mortenson, Captain Fantastic
Denzel Washington, Fences
Our take: Denzel is astonishing in “Hidden Fences”, but Casey Affleck delivers a once in a career performance. Such a great role.
Best Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy
20thCenturyWomen
Deadpool
Florence Foster Jenkins
WINNER: La La Land
SingStreet
Our take: Duh.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy
Annette Bening, 20thCentury Women
Lily Collins, Rules Don’t Apply
Hailee Steinfeld, The Edge of Seventeen
WINNER: Emma Stone, La La Land
Meryl Streep, FlorenceFoster Jenkins
Our take: Emma Stone is the best. Such a great, real person who can act and sing and dance like a dream. Oh, and she just whupped Meryl Streep at an awards show. That’s like beating Ghouls n’ Ghosts on one quarter.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy
AnthonyAnderson, Black-ish
Gael GarciaBernal, Mozart in the Jungle
WINNER: Donald Glover, Atlanta
Nick Nolte, Graves
Jeffrey Tambor, Transparent
Our take: This is a big surprise. This seemed like one of those “the nomination is the award” scenarios for Glover. Nice win.
Best Director-Motion Picture
WINNER: Damien Chazelle, La La Land
Tom Ford, Nocturnal Animals
Mel Gibson, Hacksaw Ridge
BarryJenkins, Moonlight
KennethLonergan, Manchester by the Sea
Our take: Not a surprise. He killed it.
Best Television Series-Drama
WINNER: The Crown, Netflix
Game of Thrones, HBO
Stranger Things, Netflix
This Is Us, NBC
Westworld, HBO
Our take: This is a surprise. Game of Thrones delivered a great season. Stranger Things was a phenomenon. Westworld was a revelation. But The Crown is really proving itself to be a special project.
Best Performance by an Actress In A Television Series – Drama
Claire Foy, The Crown
Caitriona Balfe, Outlander
Keri Russell, The Americans
Winona Ryder, Stranger Things
Evan Rachel Wood, Westworld
Our take: Really good show. And a surprise. Very happy Winona Ryder didn’t win for yelling her lines.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television
Riz Ahmed, The Night Of
Bryan Cranston, All the Way
John Turturro, The Night Of
Tom Hiddleston, Night Manager
Courtney B. Vance, People v. OJ Simpson
Our take: This is stunning and fantastic. Hiddleston is astonishing on that show. Riz Ahmed was fabulous and Turturro redefined his career. But this is a movie star who really excelled in the long form, and it’s a nice win.
Best Motion Picture-Foreign Language
Divines
WINNER: Elle
Neruda
The Salesman
Toni Erdmann
Our take: Paul Verhoeven was snubbed for Starship Troopers so good on him!
Best Motion Picture-Animated
Strings
Moana
My Life as a Zucchini
Sing Trolls
WINNER: Zootopia
Our take: “Fantasia Day”. Steve Carell nails it. Great little performance by Kristen Wiig and Carrell. Zootopia (our review) is a safe bet but there’s no denying its merit.
Best Screenplay-Motion Picture
Damien Chazelle, La La Land
Tom Ford, Nocturnal Animals
Barry Jenkins, Moonlight
Kenneth Lonergan, Manchester by the Sea
Taylor Sheridan, Hell or High Water
Our take: This is the one award the film probably doesn’t deserve but there’s obviously a groundswell for La La Land. Tough crowd here. Manchester by the Sea is a powerhouse. Hell or High Water is a script that turns a decent movie into a great one. Moonlight seemed to be coming in with a ton of momentum. Interesting result.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy
Colin Farrell, Lobster
Ryan Gosling, La La Land
Hugh Grant, Florence Foster Jenkins
JonahHill, War Dogs
RyanReynolds, Deadpool
Our take: So charming. So classy. Eat it, haters.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Olivia Colman, The Night Manager
Lena Headey, Game of Thrones
Chrissy Metz, This Is Us
MandyMoore, This Is Us
ThandieNewton, Westworld
Our take: Before you lose your mind, Olivia Colman is one of the best actors working and still so few know who she is. She is a revelation on Broadchurch and she’s amazing in The Night Manager. That said, Thandie Newton should have won. But good on Olivia for the win!
Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series-Drama
Viola Davis, Fences
Naomie Harris, Moonlight
Nicole Kidman, Lion
OctaviaSpencer, Hidden Figures
Michelle Williams, Manchester by the Sea
Our take: Was Michael Keaton making a “Hidden Fences” joke already? If so, amazing. If not, whoops! Viola Davis is amazing. So good to see her take home the gold.
Best Original Song-Motion Picture
“Can’t Stop the Feeling,” Trolls
“City of Stars,” La La Land
“Faith,” Sing
“Gold,” Gold
“How Far I’llGo,” Moana
Our take: Trolls git robbed! We live in a world where a movie based on Trollls was nominated for something. “City of Stars” is wonderful.
Best Original Score-Motion Picture
Moonlight
WINNER: La La Land
Arrival
Lion
Hidden Figures
Our take: Great. A great movie and a great choice. Watch our review.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Sterling K. Brown,People v. OJ Simpson
WINNER: Hugh Laurie, The Night Manager
John Lithgow, The Crown
Christian Slater, Mr. Robot
John Travolta,People v. OJ Simpson
Our take: This is a shock. Hugh Laurie is a darling for House, but he managed to slay O.J. Simpson. This was a great role on a great show and his Drumpf jab was aces.
Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
American Crime
The Dresser
The Night Manager
The Night Of
WINNER: The People vs. OJ Simpson
Our take: Cuba Gooding, Jr. and John Travolta are on a stage right now. Way to go, voters! The Night Manager and The Night Of are classic cuts of beef but apparently a hamburger is what people wanted.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television
Felicity Huffman, American Crime
Riley Keough, The Girlfriend Experience
WINNER: Sarah Paulson, People v. O.J. Simpson
Charlotte Rampling, London Spy
Kerry Washington, Confirmation
Our take: I don’t think anyone is surprised here. This show somehow managed to capture the zeitgeist in a way that defied the odds. I don’t get it. The show was so goofy, but there’s no denying that is based on a moment that captures a seminal moment in the way we watch television.
Best Television Series-Musical or Comedy
WINNER – Atlanta
Blackish
Mozart in the Jungle
Transparent
Veep
Our take: This was sort of expected. If you’ve read our coverage of the show, it’s no big surprise. With that said, sometimes the voters lose their minds.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series-Musical or Comedy
Rachel Bloom, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep
Sarah Jessica Parker, Divorce
Issa Rae, Insecure
Gina Rodriguez, Jane the Virgin
WINNER: Tracy Ellis Ross, Black-ish
Our take: This show is beloved. Good for her. This was a tough and unpredictable field. Any field which includes Veep and Dreyfus has their work cut out.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series-Drama
RamiMalek, Mr. Robot
Bob Odenkirk, Better Call Saul
Matthew Rhys, The Americans
LievSchreiber, Ray Donovan
WINNER: Billy Bob Thornton, Goliath
Our take: Billy Bob carries this show, one which is pretty solid though hampered by the lack of a killer instinct. It’s a surprise win, but no one has done such a good job of parlaying his film career into something really special on TV.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture
Mahershala Ali, Moonlight
Jeff Bridges, Hell or High Water
Simon Helberg, Florence Foster Jenkins
Dev Patel, Lion
WINNER: Aaron Taylor Johnson, Nocturnal Animals
Our take: Wow. I found Nocturnal Creatures to be a bit of a weak offering and Johnson’s performance was built wholly on over-the-top work. It’s fun, but hardly the stuff dreams are made of.
