Leaked Government Plans to Extend Smoking Ban - Are we becoming a Nanny State? says NTIAMichael Kill CEO NTIA SaysFollowing the Government leak yesterday which revealed plans to extend the smoking ban to outdoor areas such as beer gardens, spaces outside nightclubs, restaurant terraces and Shisha bars have understandably caused concern across the sector. Although smoking rates have seen a significant decline, many have switched to vaping—a trend that, according to these leaks, may also fall under new regulatory scrutiny. This raises the critical question: Are we on the brink of becoming a nanny state? What is next? While these measures may rightly be driven by public health considerations, they risk dividing opinion and imposing yet another regulatory burden on businesses already facing considerable challenges. At a time when our industry desperately needs the freedom to trade, the last thing we need is further barriers.Although many will not be personally affected by these potential changes, it's important to recognise that 6.4 million people in the UK still smoke, many of whom enjoy doing so in social settings like beer gardens. These leaked regulations could significantly impact their lifestyle choices and the businesses that serve them.As we consider the implications of these potential restrictions, we must question whether such an approach is truly in the public interest or whether it risks over-regulation at the cost of personal freedom and business viability.

Save Cosmic Slop! (MAP Charity) ! We're facing our biggest challenge in nearly two decades—a threat that could close our doors forever. A proposed development by Cheyne Capital would place 310 flats next to our home, the Grade II listed Hope Foundry. This could jeopardize Cosmic Slop, our essential fundraiser, due to potential noise complaints. What can you do? **Sign our petition to protect MAP's future. **Request a Deed of Easem*nt to safeguard our events from noise complaints. **Advocate for changes to the building plans, like replacing balconies with a wall. Every signature counts! Let's protect Leeds' cultural scene together. https://buff.ly/3YXbwBt

Events Like Oasis Are Vital to the UK Economy: Estimated to Generate £4 for Every £1 Spent Says NTIAThe Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) underscores the critical role that events and festivals play in fuelling the UK economy, delivering a substantial return on investment and enhancing the vibrancy of local communities. As highlighted by NTIA CEO Michael Kill, events like Oasis, which spark excitement, nostalgia, and community spirit, are more than just entertainment—they are economic powerhouses.“Events & Festivals are vital to the recovery of our towns and cities, estimated to generate an impressive return of over £4 for every £1 spent," states Michael Kill. "Events like Oasis, TRNSMT, On The Beach with Carl Cox, Beautiful Days, Reading and Glastonbury and many more don't just bring people together; they drive economic recovery, supporting local businesses, creating jobs, and revitalising our communities. We need to champion these events and encourage more to happen across the UK."Kill emphasised the necessity of continuing to support and expand the events and festival sector, recognising its immense impact on the UK’s economic stability. "The energy and excitement these events bring are irreplaceable, and their contribution to the economy is undeniable. They also help inspire the next generation of artists who could be tomorrow's headliners. We need more of these moments of celebration to secure a prosperous future for our towns and cities."The NTIA calls on policymakers, local authorities, and communities to rally behind the events sector, ensuring they continue to thrive and bolster the UK economy.Good luck everyone today!

Morning thoughts! As we consider a 4-day workweek and limiting shifts (I’m all for work-life balance and staff well-being), it does raise some challenges during peak times—like the summer rush or big events. With the potential removal of zero-hour contracts, we might need more staff and more contractually committed hours. This means businesses would have to boost their remuneration budgets. When things are busy, this works, but during slower periods, could this become a bit of a challenge? What do you think?

Crowds at popular events are especially vulnerable to terrorist attacks, particularly at entry (ingress) and exit (egress) points. To address these risks, the National Protective Security Authority (NPSA) has issued new guidance focused on mitigating terrorist threats during these critical times. This guidance emphasizes the importance of planning and preparation to ensure the safety of individuals attending events, with a particular focus on securing ingress and egress points. NTIA & UKDSA support this initiative to start the process of dealing with exploitation within the workplace across the security sector! Paul Fullwood - Director of Inspections and Enforcement - SIA "We know that labour exploitation exists within the private security industry. The harm to individuals is unacceptable. The consequent injury to standards and public safety, to law-abiding businesses who are undercut by criminal enterprises, and to the reputation of the industry, demand a response.""We’re confident that most private security suppliers meet high standards and provide fair working conditions, which contributes to public safety. However, we know from our intelligence and stakeholder engagement that the industry has concerns that some companies are undermining quality businesses through alleged poor practices.""We’ve set up a dedicated multi-disciplinary team across the SIA, headed at director level, to address labour exploitation under the name Operation EMPOWER."Read More: https://buff.ly/3ADgyJb

Fascinating shift in the strength of public opinion! YouGov's February 2024 poll showed some clear support on the proposed ban, but yesterday's results reveal a marked change. As the reality of the ban sinks in, non-smokers are more supportive—yet concerns over government interference in personal choices loom large. The bigger question now: what comes next? #PublicOpinion #PolicyDebate #SmokersRightsLink to the August 29th pollhttps://buff.ly/4dKLANWLink to the February 28th pollhttps://buff.ly/3Z4L20R
