Are you working to live or living to work? My story of near burnout and how I discovered the true meaning of work-life balance 👇👇 Yesterday I watched the documentary 'After Work' by Erik Gandini (trailer below) and I realised how lucky I am to live in Europe, in Poland :) The documentary depicted different approaches to work, sometimes even pathological. Working 16 hours a day, 6 days a week (Korea), avoiding holidays or working under constant supervision (America), or 8 hours of sitting behind a desk and doing.... nothing (Kuwait). These are extremes, of course, but they nevertheless give food for thought. And yet, there is a revolution ahead of us with increasingly widespread automation and the development of artificial intelligence algorithms. To me, work holds great significance. I enjoy what I do, I feel that my work has meaning. But I try hard to limit the amount of time I spend at work. Why, you ask? Because it wasn't always like this. Once upon a time, I used to work from home. I worked a lot because I thought I had so much energy and could do more and more. At first it was ok, but after a while burnout came and I had to strongly change my attitude to work. Now I try hard to stick to work-life balance. It may seem like just a cathy phrase, but for me, it carries profound implications. On a daily basis, I try to stick to a few principles in particular: 1. I don't work from home. In fact, I don't even possess a home computer for work purposes. In essence, my home is my sanctuary, a place of tranquillity, whilst my workplace is the office. This kind of separation helps me to maintain balance. 2. I favour working smart over working excessively. Although my role demands a high degree of creativity, being systematic is as crucial as fresh ideas. I also find AI tools to be remarkably usefulI😉 3. I don't work more than 8 hours a day. This may seem obvious, but I sometimes find it very difficult to finish work on a project on a given day. After all, just one more hour and it will be finished... Nevertheless, it is necessary. And besides, it gives me distance and the next day, with a fresh mind, I usually correct something I didn't see before. 3. Engaging with people, be they strangers or dear ones, gives me lots of energy and inspiration. But it can't be online! I have to go out, meet someone, talk to them, see how they react. 4. I limit social media. Half an hour a day is enough. 5. I cultivate diverse interests (more on this another time perhaps) Would love to hear your thoughts on work-life balance. How do you achieve it? Is it an elusive concept to you? Drop your insights below ⬇️⬇️ If you found value in this post, show some love with a like, share, or follow for more insights. 🙏💡

Very true. The work will never stop, but start each day by prioritising. Assess what must be done first. Make time for short breaks throughout the day to maintain your energy and focus. Realise what you have accomplished each day, and keep moving forwards.

In fact, I don’t believe you should ever be caught up at work. There’s always something else to do. You have to get used to that feeling. And you have to be ok that you’ll never get it all done, you can’t and shouldn’t, if you’re strategically prioritizing what’s most important and where you spend your time everyday. It’s all about focus.

This has always been true, but it took me a while to realize it for myself personally. While some managers certainly take advantage of employees by queuing up endless tasks, I think effective management does mean mostly keeping an employee's queue full- that's just good management! There should always be something for a worker to do, and it should contribute to the business's objectives. A good manager will communicate with their employees often to negotiate workload and ensure that both the worker's and the organization's needs are being met.

Anyone else ever find themselves making preventable errors at work because you put too much pressure on yourself for having a never ending to do list? .If so, STOP what you are doing and read the article👇🏼 .Unfinished to-list don’t reflect negatively on your performance. .This article is a great reminder that you can be a great employee who gives discretionary effort everyday and still have an unfinished to-do list.#keepgrowing #leadershipdevelopment
