Schutzbrief is a form of insurance that provides extended assistance to motorists in the event of breakdowns, accidents or other unforeseen situations on the road. This type of insurance is often included with an auto liability policy or can be purchased separately. Schutzbrief offers a wide range of services designed to ensure the safety and comfort of the driver and passengers, as well as to minimize the inconvenience associated with vehicle breakdowns.

Key benefits of Schutzbrief
Coverage provided by Schutzbrief applies to the insured vehicle, regardless of who is driving. This means that the insurance is valid not only for the owner of the car, but also for any driver driving that vehicle. Depending on the insurance company, benefits and reimbursem*nt levels may vary, but the minimum set of basic services is uniform and established by law:
1
Recovery, towing and recovery service
One of the key services provided by Schutzbrief is the organization of roadside assistance. If the car breaks down, the towing service can try to fix the problem on site. In this case, the insurance company covers the costs of minor repairs and spare parts, usually up to 200 euros.
If on-site repair is not possible, the car is towed to the nearest service center, and the costs of this operation are also paid by the insurance company, often within the same limit of up to 200 euros. In some cases, one general budget is allocated for all emergency maintenance and towing services.
2
Reimbursem*nt for travel and accommodation expenses
If the breakdown or accident occurs more than 50 kilometers from home and the car cannot be repaired immediately, Schutzbrief offers compensation for a number of additional expenses:
• Travel there and back: The insurance company reimburses the costs of returning home or continuing the trip to your final destination. For distances up to 1200 kilometers, train travel (even first class in some cases) or air travel may be covered. In addition, taxi costs to the train station or airport are often reimbursed.
• Accommodation: If a delay in repairs requires an overnight stay at the location, insurance will cover the cost of a hotel stay. Usually up to three nights are reimbursed with a limit of 50-100 euros per person per night.
3
Car rental
If the driver does not wish to remain at the scene of the accident and is unable to travel to his or her destination or home by train or plane, Schutzbrief can cover the cost of a rental car. In most cases, rent can be reimbursed for up to seven days with a limit of 50-70 euros per day. Higher limits are often available for international travel.
Additional benefits for trips abroad
Schutzbrief is especially useful when traveling abroad. In this case, coverage may include:
- Shipping Parts: If your vehicle needs repairs overseas, insurance may cover the cost of shipping the necessary parts.
- Transportation of the vehicle: If the vehicle cannot be repaired locally, the insurance company can arrange for its transportation back to the owner's country of residence.
- Customs clearance and disposal: If the vehicle needs to be scrapped or cleared through customs abroad, Schutzbrief can cover these costs as well.
